Diagnosis: anterior rays of dorsal fin longer than those following, produced into a lobe. Some jaw teeth longer than others, needle-like, not uniformely tiny. Colour: dark brown Size: to 28 cm, rarely more than 20 cm SL.

Habitat: meso- to bathypelagic. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: most common in the south of the area. Elsewhere, worldwide in tropical to temperate seas.
