Genus Erethmophorus

Erethmophorus Giglioli, 1889

Diagnosis: second dorsal finrays 67-77; anal fin not indented, with 65-74 rays; pelvic fins with several elongate rays, with some ornamentation distally. Colour: body with a series of dusky transverse bars and dark blotches on dorsal and anal fins. Size: to 8 cm SL.

Habitat: pelagic. Apparently rare. Food: no data. Reproduction: perhaps the early stage of a known species, or else neotenic.

Distribution: Mediterranean, from the Ligurian and Tyrrenian Seas and the Straits of Messina. Elsewhere, possibly in the subtropical North Atlantic.
