Genus Margrethia

Margrethia Jespersen and Taning, 1919

Small fishes, moderately elongate; mouth large, branchiostegal rays 16, 5 on epihyal. Anal fin origin slightly behind dorsal fin origin, anterior rays of both elongate; dorsal adipose fin present; last dorsal and anal finrays split to base. Pelvic fins slightly in advance of dorsal fin origin; anus close to anal fin origin. Swimbladder capacious. Scales deciduous.
Photophores: absent on isthmus; OA and SO absent; BR 11-12 (13); VAV 4.
Circumglobal, oceanic, subtropical-tropical; mesopelagic at 100- 600 m, no diel vertical migrations. Feeding on crustaceans, small fishes. Dioecious; post-larval photophore development protracted, sequential, OP 3 developing first.
