Body moderate to very elongate, smooth. Predorsal length more than 2/3 SL; caudal peduncle less than 20% SL. Pelvic fins narrow and winglike, each with a freely projecting, well-developed muscular base; caudal fin, at least in larvae and adolescent stages, with the more median rays prolonged into a ribbon-like streamer.
