Trachichthyidae

Body deep to more or less elongate, always compressed. Mucus cavities on head. Teeth small, in bands. Usually ridges of scutes along abdomen.
Some in deep waters, others coastal, apparently mostly bottomliving. Most species fairly rare and not used for food.
