Acanthochaenus Gill, 1884

Head ridges strongly serrate. No spines in dorsal fin. Small, firmly fixed scales with 1-3 large spines at their centres. Lateral line more or 1, spineless. 5 very short, bulblike, pyloric coeca.
Probably bathypelagic. Very rare. Nothing is known about food, reproduction or behaviour.
