Body oblong or ovate, more or less compressed. Head large. Snout blunt, rounded. A pair of hyoid barbels present behind the symphysis of the lower jaw. 4 normal branchiostegal rays and 3 modified branchiostegal rays curved around base of hyoid barbels; acoustico-lateralis system relatively little developed as compared with that of other berycoids.
Warmer parts of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Benthic on the continental shelf and slope in rather deep waters, in depths to 770 m.
