Genus Beryx

Beryx Cuvier, 1829

Common synonym: Actinoberyx Roule, 1923.

Body and head compressed, more or less deep. Size of head normal, eyes very large. Teeth small, in bands. No spines on head. Both dorsal and anal fins always more or less erected. Caudal deeply forked. Scales on body and gill covers, finely ctenoid.
Apparently fairly common in some places near bottom at a depth of about 400 to 600 m. In Madeira, often seen in quantities in fish market. Well appreciated as food fish in Madeira.
