Genus Tylosurus

Tylosurus Cocco, 1833

Body almost round in cross-section or slightly compressed; caudal peduncle with a narrow black median keel. Lower jaw only a little longer than upper. Gillrakers absent. Anterior lobes of dorsal and anal fins large; caudal fin strongly forked. Vomerine teeth absent. Vertebrae 67-96. Scales medium-sized to very small. Juveniles with nearly equal jaws and with posterior part of dorsal fin expanded into a large black lobe.
