Genus Muraena

Muraena [Artedi, 1738] Linnaeus, 1758

Body elongate, muscular, scaleless. Head short, high; anterior and posterior nostrils tubular. Jaws close together all along their length; teeth conical, usually long and acute on jaws and vomer. Gill openings restricted to small lateral pore. Dorsal and anal fins included in a dermal fold, confluent with caudal fin; pectoral and pelvic fins absent.
