Fairly large sharks (to about 3 m). Snout moderately elongate; nostrils entirely separate from mouth (no grooves between them), their anterior margin without barbels; eyes over mouth, with a little-developed eyelid; spiracle as large as eyes; teeth very small and numerous; 5 small gill openings, the last two over the pectoral fin bases. Two dorsal fins, the first low and broadly rounded, extremely elongate, longer at base than caudal fin; anal fin present; caudal fin asymmetrical, less than half of total length; no pre-caudal pits or keels on caudal peduncle.
Benthic in deep waters of the upper continental slopes. Feeding on fishes. Ovoviviparous.
