Posterior edge of preopercle finely serrated, lower edge with strong forward-directed denticles. 2 flat opercular spines. 2 separate dorsal fins. Caudal fin moderately forked.
Littoral, also in lagoons, in eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Eurythermal and euryhaline. Gregarious when young. Feeding chiefly on shrimps and molluscs, also fishes. Eggs and larvae pelagic. Economically important, flesh much appreciated.
