Diagnosis: a median spine on back. Dorsal finrays 10; anal finrays 10.Colour: yellowish; each plate of the carapace has a dark ring, roundedor polygonal, often incomplete. Size: to about 25 cm SL.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic Ocean: the Azores, Ascension 1., St Helena, occasionally along West Africa. Very doubtful report from France (as Ostracion quadricornis Bleeker, 1863).

Habitat, distribution and abundance. Littoral. In the area: Azores- generally: eastern and central Atlantic.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
