Diagnosis: spines on front of head shorter than those just behind pectoral fins. Dorsal finrays 14-17; anal finrays 13-16. Colour: clear brown or olivaceous above, white below; many black spots scattered on body and fins. Size: to 90 cm SL.

Distribution: west coast of Iberian Peninsula, Morocco, Madeira. Perhaps also southern Mediterranean. Elsewhere, in all tropical areas.
