Diagnosis: back flat. Three spines above orbit; no spines on middle of forehead. Dorsal finrays 12; anal finrays 11. Colour: brown above, whitish below; many black spots, also on fins; a round black blotch on middle of side. Size: to about 50 cm SL.

Habitat, Food, Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Madeira and occasionally Portugal. Elsewhere, from Madeira to Angola, off Bermuda and from West Indies to Brazil.
