Diagnosis: rings 16-20 + 31-39, D 28-42, P 13-17, total subdorsal rings 7-11. Snout compressed laterally, its length more than half head length, usually deepest in front and with a distinct median dorsal ridge; eye diameter always less than least depth of snout. Colour: brownish to greenish-brown, head and body often spotted, blotched or streaked with pale. Size: to 35 cm TL.

Habitat: coasts and estuaries, usually in 420 m; relatively common amongst seaweed and Zostera. Food: no data. Reproduction: brooding March-October, mostly June-August. Males mature at about 12 cm, brood pouch-egg diameter about 2 mm; early free-living young 20-26 mm TL.

Distribution: British Isles and Atlantic coasts from Vardø (Norway) southwards to Morocco, also middle Baltic Sea, Mediterranean and Black Seas and Sea of Azov.
