Diagnosis: body and head without granulations or dermal knobs. occipital protuberances (if present) as small obtuse knobs or a blunt. conical spine directed backward; head without barbels (except short, often knob-like, barbel on upper jaw); nasal spine present: chin pore single. Spinous dorsal fin lower, height less than length. membranes notched, without free finray ends in males. D Vll-IX + 12-15; A 10-13; P 18-23. Lateral line pores 17-24. Colour: green-brown with cross-bands; oblique dark stripes on fins, broader and more prominent on spinous dorsal in males; no small round white spots or black blotch on spinous dorsal in males. Size: to 25 cm, usually 10-11 cm.
Habitat: benthic on sandy or muddy bottoms at 35-900 m, with temperatures of -2 to +3 C and salinities of 34-35. Food: benthic polychaetes (Harmothoe, Nephthys, Lumbriconereus, Myriochele, etc.), small molluscs ( Yoldiella, Yoldia, Velutina), and very rarely small crustaceans. Reproduction: spawns August September (Barents Sea); eggs demersal, about 50-150, diameter 4 mm.
Distribution: eastern coasts of Greenland northward to 74`17 N, Iceland, the Faroes; also, Novaya Zemlya (but not White Sea), southern part of Barents Sea, Scandinavian coast to Skagerrak, the Orkneys. Irish Sea and around coasts of Ireland. Elsewhere, western Greenland to 77'`28' N and North American coasts southward to Cape Cod northward to southeast Baffin Island (McAllister, 1990).

Guelpen (1985, MS) revised the species and stated that subspecies disignations appaered unfounded (McAllister, 1990).
