Diagnosis: body fusiform, compressed; dorsal profile of head slightly concave; eye large; mouth large, terminal, jaws extending only slightl beyond vertical through posterior margin of eye; teeth small; gillraker 2 + 1 + (7) 8, total (10) 11 (12). Dorsa finrays 12-13; pectoral finray 18-19; anal finrays 12 (11-13); an adipose dorsal fin present. Scales de ciduous. Mid-ventral and bilateral rows of photophores on body, L( series 12-14, not reaching to vertical from anal fin origin. Colour: (according to Matsubara, 1943) in life, dark red on sides of head and body belly silvery white with bluish reflections, fins uniformly pink. Size: to 250 mm.

Habitat: benthopelagic over continental and island slopes at 300- 800 m no evidence of vertical migrations. Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 150 mm.

Distribution: from about 24° to 35° N along continental slope and ol Madeira. Elsewhere, off Suriname and Nicaragua and off southern Braz (23-33° S), off Natal, South Africa (27-30° S), off southern Japan, off Hawaii and in Great Australian Bight.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
