Diagnosis: Atlantic: dorsal finrays 25 (24-26, rarely 23); anal finrays 19-20; pectoral finrays 13 (12-14). Gillrakers 9 (8, rarely 10) + 1 + 18 (17-19), total 28 (26-29). AO 8 (7-9) + 7 (6-8), total 15-16 (14-17). Mediterranean: dorsal finrays 24 (25, rarely 23 or 26); anal finrays 18-20; pectoral finrays 13 (12-14). Gillrakers 8-9 + 1 + 17-18 (19) total 26-28 (29). AO 8 (7-9) + 6 (7), total 14-15 (16). Adult males with large patch of luminous tissue on cheek behind eye, and another postero-dorsal to the eye. Size: to 102 mm (Atlantic) and 87 mm (Mediterranean).
Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic. Mediterranean: day at probably deeper than 1,000 m; night at 12-200 m (maximum abundance at 45-50 m). Atlantic: day deeper than 1,000 m; nyctoepipelagic at surface and down to 125 m (maximum abundance at 60 m). Food: no data. Reproduction: cheek patches develop in males at 53-55 mm; size at sexual maturity unknown.
Distribution: endemic Mediterranean and Atlantic: north temperate pattern (temperate subtropical subpattern), between about 50° and 38° N, east of 50° W and in Mauritanian upwelling region; in both eastern and western Mediterranean basins.
