Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 14 (13-15); anal finrays 14 (13-15); pectoral finrays 13-14 (12-15). Gillrakers 4 (rarely 3 or 5) + 1 + 9 (8-10, rarely 11), total 14 (13-15, rarely 16). AO 7 (6-8, rarely 9) + 5 (46, rarely 7), total 12 (11-13, rarely 10 or 14). Size: to 81 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic mesopelagic. Near Bermuda and Canaries: day at 700-1,500 m (maximum abundance at 800-1,100 m (Bermuda) and at 950 m (Canaries)); night at 20-200 m (maximum abundance in upper 200 m). Size stratification with depth both day and night. Nonmigrants during August- September and January-February (Bermuda), in October-November (Canaries) and in June (Hawaii). Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 44 mm (North and Central Atlantic) and 59 mm (South Atlantic). Spawning peak in June-July (Bermuda) and in spring (Hawaii).

Distribution: Atlantic: broadly tropical pattern (holo-eurytropical subpattern), between 35° N (eastern sector) or 42° N (western sector) south to Subtropical Convergence. Elsewhere: Indian and Pacific Oceans: tropical and subtropical waters, but being replaced by C. townsendi in subtropical eastern North Pacific.
