Diagnosis: body very deep. Mouth very protractile; mouth cleft forms almost a right angle with the main axis of the body. Dorsal fin with 85-102 rays; anal fin with 67-80 rays. Small ctenoid scales on eyed side and cycloid scales on blind side; the many small ctenoid scales give the fish a hairy touch. Colour: brownish, with darker spots and blotches; a dark bar through the eyes. Size: to about 25 cm SL.
Habitat: mainly on stones and rocks in the algae zone. Food: small fish and crustaceans. Reproduction: between February and June.
Distribution: from Trondheim to the Bay of Biscay.
