Diagnosis: dorsal fin with 85-94 rays; anal fin with 64-74 rays. Lateral line with 95-109 scales. Colour: yellowish or greyish-brown; dorsal and anal fins with indefinite darker spots posteriorly. Size: to about 50 cm SL.

Habilat: found at depths down to about 400 m. Food, Reproduclion: see genus.

Distribution: Atlantic coasts from 64° N (including Iceland) to Cape Bojador (26°N) and in the Mediterranean and Aegean.
