Diagnosis: dorsal fin with 79-86 rays; anal fin with 65-69 rays. Lateral line with 87-93 scales. Colour: 2 distinct spots posteriorly on both dorsal and anal fins. Size: to about 40 cm SL.

Habitat: found at depths down to 70~800 m. Food, Reproduction: see genus.

Distribution: from the British Isles to Cape Bojador (26° N) and in the Mediterranean.
