Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 52-59; anal finrays 39-42. Lateral line scales 73-76; a distinct supra-temporal branch of lateral line present. Colour: brownish or blackish, without distinctive markings; fins paler with traces of darker spots. Size: to 26 cm SL.

Habitat: at shallow depths on muddy bottoms; often in brackish water and may even enter rivers. Food: small fishes and bottom invertebrates. Reproduction: spawns in January-March under the ice. Commercial importance: small; no statisties available.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic, from the Murman coast and eastwards. Found in all Arctic waters except Greenland.
