Diagnosis: branchiostegal rays 8. Dorsal finrays 76-101; anal finrays 60-79. Lateral line scales 85-97. Colour: brownish, sometimes with darkcr spots of varying size. Size: to about 50 cm SL, seldom more than 30 cm.
Habitat: on soft bottoms, most often at depths of 10-400 m. Food: bottom invertebrates and small fishes. Reproduction: spawns between January and June. Commercial importance: none, and is rather considered an unwanted competitor to more valuable commercial bottomfishes.
Distribution: off eastern Greenland and from the English Channel to the coast of Murmansk. Elsewhere, off western Greenland and from Newfoundland to Cape Cod.
Subspecies
Hippoglossoides platessoides platessoides: 41-43 scales between lateral line and middle of back; Greenland and western Atlantic (Clofnam 197.3.1.1).
