Diagnosis: body elongate. Snout rounded, with a short rostral hook not reaching to vertical through front margin of upper eye; eyes on left side, small, with a broad space between them. Maxilla reaching back behind upper eye. Dorsal finrays 115-125; anal finrays 96-99; caudal finrays 12. Eyed side with 2 lateral lines, the midlateral with 84-91 scales; scales ctenoid on eyed side, cycloid on blind side. Colour: eyed side dark brown, blind side whitish. Size: to 40 cm.
Habitat: benthic on muddy or sandy bottoms of the continental shelf, at depths of 15-40 m (mainly 15-25 m). Food: wide range of bottomliving invertebrates. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: a single record from the Netherlands coast (Nijssen, 1966). Elsewhere, West Africa (Congo to Senegal).
