Diagnosis: depth of body more than three times in length of body. Eyes very large, about one-third of length of head. Anterior gill arch with 11 long rakers on lower part. Dorsal finrays 110-118; anal finrays 86-94. Lateral line with about 75 scales. Colour: brownish, sometimes with darker markings; caudal fin with dark vertical band. Size: to about 15 cm SL.
Habitat: benthic in rather deep water (200 550 m). Food: small fishes and invertebrates. Reproduction: spawns in Mediterranean during autumn.
Distribution: Mediterranean and Aegean, eastern Atlantic off northwestern Africa to about 24° N.
