Diagnosis: body oval, very thin, almost transparent. Snout as long as or longer than diameter of eye. Lateral line with 50-56 scales. Colour: eyed side brownish or greyish, sometimes with irregular darker markings. Size: to about 20 cm SL.

Habitat: benthic on mixed or muddy bottoms down to about 200 m. Food: small fishes and invertebrates. Reproduction: between April and August .

Distribution: eastern Atlantic, from Trondheim to Cape Blanc (21° N) and Mediterranean.
