Diagnosis: anterior gill arch with 7-8 long rakers on lower part. Dorsal finrays less than 80; anal finrays 51-57. Lateral line with 38-40 scales. Colour: brownish, sometimes with dark spots or black dots. Size: less than 10 cm SL.

Habitat: benthic on the upper part of the continental shelf. Food: small fishes and invertebrates. Reproduction: between May and August.

Distribution: Black Sea and Mediterranean westwards to Balearic Is.
