Diagnosis: body deep; musculature firm. Teeth in lower jaw moderately long and knife-like, close-set. Origin of dorsal fin before or over origin of pectoral fin. D2 22-24; A III + 21-23; P 20-21. Vertebrae 33-35. Colour: pronounced vertically banded pattern. Size: to 10 cm SL (all known specimens immature).

Habitat: oceanic, epi- or mesopelagic. Very little is known concerning this infrequently seen species.

Distribution: not reported from the area, but to be expected. Elsewhere, antitropical in temperate waters of the Atlantic.

Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
