Diagnosis: Dl VII; D2 26-29; A II + 29-31; caudal fin slightly concave or straight. 75-80 scales on the lateral line. Colour: yellowish- brown with many black blotches along the sides. Caudal fin with some spots on the basal half and dark edge. Size: to 40 cm SL, usually 25-30.

Distribution: Mediterranean, Adriatic, eastern Atlantic from Portugal to Angola.
