Diagnosis: body robust, elongate. Preopercular notch and lobe evident. D XI + 15-17; A III + II-12; caudal fin truncate. Gillrakers long and slender. 29-32 on lower limb of first arch. Scales ctenoid. Colour: reddish-brown with irregular wavy darker lines and white blotches, more eviident in young; a black saddle on caudal peduncle in young. Size: to 80 cm SL.
Habitat: rocky and sandy bottoms at 15-200 m. Food: carnivorous, mostly fishes. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic, Morocco, Madeira, northward to Bay of Biscay, also Mediterranean, chiefly southern parts. Elsewhere, in eastern Atlantic southward to Angola, in western Atlantic off Bermuda, Caribbean Sea and Brazil.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. Bertolini, 1933: 315, pl. 21 (fig. 12-13) (wrongly named Epinephelus alexandrinus). Young often figured in ehe literature quoted above.
