Diagnosis: head large, 2.9-3.3 in standard length, about the same as depth of body. Mouth small, slightly oblique. Snout shorter than orbit. Two pores on the tip of chin and a short, shallow groove behind. Gillrakers 12-13 on lower arm. Dorsal fin deeply notched, with 12 spines and 16 rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 11-13 rays, third anal spine longer than second or about equal to second when pressed together. Scales fairly large, 47-53 in lateral line, 7-8 (1) 13 in transversal line. Colour: back brown, belly silvery; dark blotch on the upper corner of opercle. Size: to 35 cm SL. usually 20 30 cm.

Habitat: sandy and rocky bottoms, from shallow waters to 50 m. Food: bottom and near-bottom invertebrates. Reproduction: summer months.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic coast from Madeira and Morocco and southern and eastern Mediterranean, also recorded from Sète (France). Elsewhere, from Cape Blanc and the Canaries to Angola.
