Diagnosis: head comparatively small, about 3.3 in standard length, much less than depth of body, snout long. Mouth small, slightly oblique, maxilla not reaching front of orbit. Gillrakers 19-20 on lower arm. Dorsal fin continuous with 11-12 spines and 17-19 rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 8-9 rays. Scales small, 54-57 in lateral line, 14 (1) 22-23 in transversal line. Colour: back greyish-violet, belly silvery. Size: to 80 cm SL, usually 30-60 cm.
Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms, in depths of 10-150 m. Food: zoobenthos and zooplankton. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic from the Canaries to Portugal, also western Mediterranean. Elsewhere, southward, along West Africa to Angola.
