Diagnosis: head large, about 3.0 in standard length, about the same as depth of body. Eye large, about 3.0 in length of head; snout short. Mouth large, oblique, chin prominent. Gillrakers 20-22 on lower arm. Dorsal fin deeply notched with (10) 12 (13) spines and 11-13 rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 9-10 rays. Scales fairly large, 47-50 in lateral line, 6 (1)12 in transversal line. Colour: back olive-brown, belly silvery; dark blotch on the upper corner of opercle. Size: to 25 cm SL, usually 15-20 cm.
Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms, in depths of 10-100 m, moving near the surface at night. Food: invertebrates and small fishes. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic, coast of Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to Angola.
