Diagnosis: body short, deep; eye slightly larger than snout; preopercular edge serrated, preopercular ridge smooth, weakly denticulate at angle; mouth oblique, lower jaw projecting; villiform teeth in bands in jaws, on vomer and palatines. Dl VII; D2 I + 8-9; A II + 6-8; pectoral fin not reaching (or rarely) anal fin origin; caudal fin subtruncate or at most feebly emarginate. Scales ctenoid, 25 in lateral line. Colour: brownish or silver grey; 3 darker vertical bands on each side, the first including a black ocellus with yellow or white ring, last band near the base of caudal fin. Size: about 10 cm SL.
Habitat: muddy or sandy bottoms to 50 m (Israel). Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: immigrant in the eastern Mediterranean, occasional off Israel. Elsewhere, Red Sea and western Indian ocean (East Africa, Persian Gulf).
