Diagnosis: long and slender body; head 9.2-9.9 times in SL. Dorsal finrays 113-115; anal finrays 91-94. Colour: dark in holotype and light in the only other known specimen (from fish stomach). Size: to about 300 mm SL.
Habitat: meso- and upper bathypelagic in tropical waters. Food: no data. Reproduction: oviparous.
Distribution: one specimen from off Madeira. Elsewhere, from off the Bahamas.
Note. Brotulotaenia nigra is very close to B. crassa and differs only by the number of dorsal and anal finrays.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
