Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 68-74; anal finrays 51-52; pectoral finrays 19-20.
Thick skin on snout and around eyes with scattered papillae. Size:
to about 120 mm.

Distribution: found in the Mediterranean from the Balearic Is. to the
Adriatic.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. According to Cohen (1964: 7) the larval specimen mentioned by Emery (1886: 158, fig. 21) and by Roule and Angel (1930: 110, pl. 6 (fig. 146)) does not belong to O. ater Risso, 1810.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
