Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 87-93, anal finrays 69-77, pectoral finrays 22-23. Developed gillrakers on anterior arch 3-4. Spine on opercle flattened. Lateral line in two sections, an upper and a lower.

Distribution: known from a few specimens off Madeira and Portugal and in the Mediterranean.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. The larva figured by d'Ancona, 1939: 167, fig. 6 and Padoa, 1956b: 754, fig. 651, belongs to the brotulid genus Oculospinus (cf. Nielsen, 1966a).
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
