Diagnosis: head width about equal to width of mouth cleft; adipose eyelid well developed, covering most of pupil; upper lip thin, without papillae, labial teeth of upper jaw quite long, curved, loosely spaced, in 1 row only; lower lip not bent posteriorly, cleft of mouth longer than wide. Pectoral axillary scale slightly less than one-third length of fin; 9 soft anal finrays. Scales in lateral series about 35. Colour: back blue/green, flanks and belly pale or silvery; scales on back and flanks streaked to form longitudinal stripes. Size: to 45 cm SL.

Habitat: pelagic, in large schools, sometimes in deep offshore waters.Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Atlantic coast of Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to Mauritania and Senegal.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. Tortonese, 1963a (the syntypes, 50-65 mm SL).
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
