Diagnosis: head broad, its width about equal to width of mouth cleft; adipose eyelid well developed, covering most of pupil; upper lip thin, less than pupil diameter; corner of mouth cleft reaching almost to below front of eye. Pectoral fin tip to vertical through first dorsal fin origin, axillary scale rudimentary. Scales in lateral series 31-39; scales on head extend forward to level of anterior nostrils. Pyloric caeca 5. Colour: back grey/blue, flanks and belly pale or silvery. Size: to 30 cm SL.

Habitat: pelagic, coastal waters, including lagoons and estuaries. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: eastern Mediterranean (Israel, Egypt). Elsewhere, Red Sea, Indian Ocean.
