Diagnosis: body elongate, depth about 11-12 times in SL. Teeth usually present on palatines in adults. Dorsal fin long, virtually reaching to base of caudal fin, with 61-66 spines, the anterior 1-2 spines free (not connected by membrane); anal fin with 40-43 soft finrays; caudal fin bluntly rounded. Colour: body light yellowish, with numerous irregular brown patches (most pronounced along back). Size: to 36.5 cm SL, usually 20-23 cm.
Habitat: demersal on clay or sandy bottoms at 5-70 m; hide among weeds or rest on bottom coiled like a snake. Food: entomostracans, also fish eggs and annelids. Reproduction: apparently in October/November; a gravid female of 16.4 cm from the Kara Sea had 490 eggs (nearly ripe, 3 mm in diameter).
Distribution: White Sea, south-western part of Kara Sea, southern part of Chukchi Sea (not Spitsbergen, Iceland, south-western coasts of Greenland). Elsewhere, south-eastern part of Barents Sea, coasts of western Greenland.
