Diagnosis: see genus. Dl VI (VI-VII); D2 I + 15-16 (14-18); A I + 13-14 (12-15); P 15 (14-16). Scales in lateral series 45-48 (42-50). Vertebrae 32 (30-33). Colour: brownish- to yellowish-green, with about 5 broad, irregular, but more or less oblique dark bands across body; males dark. Size: to 11 cm.

Habitat: slightly brackish and freshwaters, in shallows, under stones and weed. Food: crustaceans and insects. Reproduction: late spring to midsummer. Eggs 2.5 x 1.3 mm, on underside of shells and stones. Sexually mature at 1 year.

Distribution: rivers and estuaries of Black Sea, Sea of Azov and Caspian Sea; also rivers of northern Aegean, and Aral Sea.
