Diagnosis: lateral line system with sub-orbital row a lacking transverse rows or with none of more than 2 papillae; row b ending anteriorly behind eye; transverse rows beneath level of row b little developed, not descending through row d; head canals with pores w and d. Eyes lateral. Branchiostegal membrane attached to entire side of isthmus. Predorsal area, back to rear end of first dorsal base, and breast naked. Pelvic disc anterior membrane with straight rear edge. Caudal fin emarginate. Dl VI (Vl-VII); D2 I + 9; A I + 9 (8/9); P 15. Scales in lateral series 35-40. Vertebrae 33. Colour: yellowish, with coarse reticulation between pale saddles across back; males with 4 vertical dark bars across sides, females with 3, lacking bar beneath first dorsal fin, and without dark chin blotch. Size: to 4.6 cm.
Habitat: inshore, possibly midwater. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Mediterranean (western basin and Adriatic).
