Diagnosis: lateral line system with sub-orbital row a having 2 transverse rows, row b ending anteriorly below rear of eye; transverse rows beneath row b with only cp descending below level of row d; head canals with pore present on anterior oculoscapular canal, but no pore on preopercular canal. Eyes dorsolateral. Branchiostegal membrane attached to entire side of isthmus. Predorsal area, back to second dorsal fin, and breast, naked. Pelvic disc anterior membrane with straight to crenate rear edge. Caudal fin rounded. Dl VI; D2 I + 8-9; A I + 8-9; P 15-16 (15-17). Scales in lateral series 36-42. Vertebrae 30. Colow: fawn to greyish, with numerous scattered, tiny, intense black spots especially in adults males, which also possess 4 vertical dark bars across sides of body and prominent dark spot on rear of first dorsal fin; females lack chin spot. Size: to 6.7 cm.
Habitat: fresh and brackish waters. Food: worms, amphipods. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Mediterranean (Adriatic).
