Diagnosis: lateral line system with anterior dorsal row g developed but row h absent; sub-orbital row b reaches edge of preopercle. Nape scaled. Dl VI; D2 I + 13-16; A I + 12-15; D 18-19. Scales in lateral series 28-29. Vertebrae 27. Colour: fawn with numerous small golden-yellow spots over nape, body and caudal fin. Size: to 10 cm.

Habitat: burrowing in muddy sand and mud, 10-130 m, often associated with Nephrops. Food: polychaetes; also small crustaceans and molluscs. Reproduction: late May to August (Loch Linnhe, western Scotland); with two or more spawnings. Eggs in burrows, 1.8-1.9 x 0.9-1.0 mm. Sexually mature at 2 years, 4-5 cm. Lifespan: 11 years.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic (Skagerrak and Kattegat to north-western Spain and Portugal); Mediterranean (into Sea of Marmara). Records from Mauritania need confirmation.
