Diagnosis: Iateral-line system: in examples of 3.45-5.25 cm SL, numbers of sensory papillae in rows 1, 13-20; 2, 11-19; ot, 26-34; os, 11-22; e, 53-72; y, 3-7; m, 3-8. Nape naked before vertical of pectoral fin base. All scales cycloid, Dl VI; D2 I + 10 (8-11); A I + 9 (7-9), P 16-18; scales in lateral series 56-72. Vertebrae 27. Colour: body pale brown, with fine reticulation and 1 or 2 pale saddles conspicuous across back; dark pectoral bar with straight anterior edge; broad pale band across nape with rear edge opposite pectoral fin lobe; head conspicuously mottled, extending on to branchiostegal membrane, with intense black spot in lower anterior corner of opercle and 3 dark bars radiating from lower border of orbit. Size: to 6.55 cm.
Habitat: inshore shallows, under stones or between weed tufts, and into mid-tide pools. Food: small decapod and amphipod crustaceans. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Mediterranean and Black Sea.
