Diagnosis: see genus. D1 VI; D2 I + 11-13; A I + 10 (9-11); P 18-19 (18-20). Vertebrae 28 (27-29). Colour: mottled above, with broad dark band (pale-edged) across body behind pectoral fin and below first dorsal; another dark band below rear of second dorsal fin and on caudal peduncle. Size: to 7.2 cm (males) and 5.1 cm (females).

Habitat: fresh and brackish waters, in deeper, standing areas. Food: chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, gastropods. Reproduction: July (Varna, Black Sea); eggs large, fecundity merely 27-32.

Distribution: Black Sea, Sea of Azov and Caspian Sea estuaries and rivers.
