Diagnosis: eye in head 2.2-2.8. Preopercular spine formula 1 4-7/- 1 (see fig), strong antrorse point at base. Dl IV; D2 9; A 9. In males anterior dorsal spine and middle caudal rays filamentous. Colour: light brown, spotted and speckled darker; first dorsal mottled or striped black (or blue) and white. Size: to 18 cm, usually 10-11 cm.
Habitat: benthic, sandy bottoms from shallow waters to 100 m. Food. small bottom invertebrates, mainly crustaceans and worms. Reproduction: June July (Mediterranean); pelagic eggs and larvae.
Distribution: south-eastern Mediterranean, coasts of Lebanon and Israel (immigrant from Red Sea). Elsewhere, Indo-Pacific (Red Sea, south to Madagascar and Mauritius, east to New Guinea, the Philippines and China).
