Diagnosis. eye in head 2.5-3.3. Preopercular spine formula 12-31 (see fig), strong antrorse spine at base. Dl IV; D2 10 (rarely 9); A 9. Colour: olive to red, with 5-7 dark brown saddles. Second dorsal in males with dark brown blotches in vertical rows. Size: to 12 cm (males), 8 cm (females).

Habitat: benthic, sandy bottoms, 20-60 m. Food: small bottom invertebrates, mainly worms and crustaceans. Reproduction: no data; eggs and larvae pelagic.

Distribution: northern Mediterranean, Gulf of Genoa to western Aegean; also southern and eastern Black Sea.
